We have been exploring whether Mark Heigh’s Gili speed boats could provide a suitable setting for a toroidal-propeller trial. The first question is compatibility, not publicity: hull, engines, gear ratio, shaft or outboard arrangement, normal operating load and the routes the boats actually run.
Fast island boats carry people who depend on predictable handling and dependable maintenance. A pilot therefore needs manufacturer involvement, a qualified installer, insurance and safety review, a spare-parts plan, and a clear stop condition. No efficiency objective can take priority over those basics.
If the right configuration is identified, we would compare the present propeller with the candidate configuration over repeatable conditions. The useful record would include speed, fuel, noise, vibration, handling and crew feedback—not just a single headline number.
Draft note: this is a proposal under discussion. It does not state that a propeller has been supplied, fitted or tested on a Gili vessel.
